Notes:

Kakamega Muslim SS is located in Kakamega on the south side of town.  It is the closest school to the CES Kenya administration office.  It is situated on the same property as the Kakamega Muslim Primary School.  The two schools share a common source of water.  Surrounded by the town of Kakamega, there is not a great deal of space available.  There is for example one sports field between the two schools.  Beautiful mature hardwood trees provided a cool canopy for students studying outdoors.

Kakamega Muslim SS delivers all the curriculum that any Kenyan publicly funded secondary school would offer.  The only additional subject is religious studies where students study the principles of the Koran.

In 2008 Tania Zulkoskey, CES Volunteer from Vancouver, B.C. spent a month at Kakamega Muslim SS.  There she initiated an innovative learning program that combined photography and story telling.  Counseling techniques using the arts created ways for students to tell their life story.

The school compound itself contains seven classrooms.  Each is in need of repair and upgrading.  The Principal’s office also doubles as a teacher prep room and at times a science classroom.  The school bursar and office administrator work out of the same building.  Students are not supplied with the basics – pen, paper etc. and lack of school supplies makes learning difficult for students.
